This book has been on my TBR for a while and I'm so glad I finally got to it.
I remember seeing the posts about this book before it was released and put it on my list straight away. Who doesn't love a mix of fairytales and mystery? Even better that this one was based on the tale of Beauty and the Beast.
It wasn't my first time reading a book like this. Another series comes to mind - The Transplanted Tales by Kate SeRine. And I've played a game - The Wolf Among Us. But this one hit differently, unique in its own way.
Scarano is a wonderful storyteller and her writing is brilliant.
The macabre scenes she painted so vividly in your head, with the added bonus of the artwork to conclude each crime were fantastic. The level of detail was great. You could tell the author put a lot of time and effort into her research.
Some very memorable characters that I hope to see more of in the rest of the series and of course 'bels' adorable pup, Cerberus who is the best of boys!
It did not come as a surprise to me to discover who the culprit was after guessing quite early on, I never found the tale predictable. There were so many twists and turns and so many times where I started to second guess myself, wondering if perhaps I had gotten it wrong. The massive curveballs thrown in, and the unexpected deaths of other characters were well done and perfectly timed.
My one and only disappointment was the lack of romance in the story. While I don't think it detracted from the tale at all, I was expecting more. Normally I only read romance books, so the fact that I continued to read the book and was hooked throughout is a testament to the author's skill and storytelling abilities.
I feel the need to mention how wonderful the cover is too, of not just this book, but the whole series (so far). The designer has done a wonderful job that portrays the book and the contents perfectly. I loved the chapter headings and the artwork throughout, though be warned, the scenes may be a little too graphic for some.
Overall, this book was an absolutely thrilling read and has easily become one of my favourite reads of this year! I highly recommend grabbing yourself a copy.
