This was a new author to me and a book I picked up after reading the blurb.
A Robin Hood/The Princess Bride retelling. Yes, please!
I really enjoyed this story and didn't want to put it down (even when I had to).
The characters were all wonderfully written and each of their voices was easy to distinguish from one character to the next.
Louisa, one of the secondary characters, was one of those I hated to start with and for some of her actions/reactions throughout the book and then grew to like when she was able to redeem herself. It shows how well she was written.
I would have given this book 5* as I adored it most of the way through and looked forward to reading more. Unfortunately, I felt the ending was a little rushed.
<Spoilers>
The last few chapters of the book seemed much faster-paced than the rest of the book which made the whole ending feel rushed.
The scene with Stephen rushing to save Constance and his urgency to admit his feelings to her was great, but then he waited a month after the events of said scene to actually tell her, which felt odd and didn't work for me. I don't understand the wait. Also, the intimate scene they shared felt rushed and was over quickly which felt a little lacking after all the build-up. And I was disappointed by what happened with Louisa. I would have liked to see more of their friendship grow rather than what happened. <End Spoilers>
Overall, this was a wonderful read that fell just a little short of what I was hoping for in the end. That being said, I would certainly recommend this book to romance lovers and those who enjoy a good retelling.
